R E F E R E N C E
I am writing this letter on behalf of a former student of mine, Bernd Schroeder, who graduated with a BA from the University of Idaho in the Spring of 1998.
As a student Bernd was diligent and dedicated. The design solutions he produced as part of his coursework were appropriate and creative. A book project in particular comes to mind that was extremely conceptual and innovative. The form was adapted from a device used to keep tally of laps in a track race. The solution was impactful and personal. I also noted that Bernd was able to translate theoretical and conceptual thinking into more pragmatic terms. A solution he devised for a breast care center was relevant yet sensitive to the audience.
Bernd is a natural at managing time. He balanced his athletic schedule with his academic schedule very professionally. If he had to be away for a competition he got his work in early, and usually gave himself enough time to get criticism on preliminary stages.
During a summer back in Germany, Bernd undertook a challenging internship and was praised by his supervisors for the work he did there. Not only did he gain practical experience, he was also given some latitude in design problems which he executed with a high level of proficiency.
Bernd was an asset to his peers in class, giving substantial and relevant criticism. In class he also won a competition for a t-shirt design. He gained some production and vendor supervision experience while seeing the project through to completion.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
